TAKE FLIGHT
-- a one stroke ink painting
30" x 22" Sumi ink on watercolor paper
Quammen Health Care Consultants Corporate Art Collection

– is a Zen brush painting representative of my original style of abstract calligraphic ink markings developed twenty+ years ago. Though my studio work has evolved into complex, canvas compositions – upon occasion, I spontaneously cycle through the minimalist brush work reminiscent of early studio days.

Studying the Take Flight markings, I see a flying bird– as if my brush captured it’s energy as it zoomed by! Metaphorically, the flying bird image speaks to me about launching beyond one’s safety zone of self into a new zone of creativity and life-work. As I write this story, I realize that my brief visits to the foundation of my painting style are important without demanding to be incorporated into every new painting.

While these sojourns of minimalism touch a tenderness of familiarity... stirring within is yet a knowing, that reaching beyond familiarity is close at heart. I call these moments, "window’s of opportunity." In order to grow mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally, I will ultimately Take Flight  at each and every sojourn; welcoming a gratitude that rattles my bones…all in good faith to spring toward new horizons.
