| ANGELS SING
47” x 22” “Angels Sing” is part of a series of canvas paintings that emerged as a result of a creative shift in my method of painting. I have an insatiable appetite for leaps of faith, especially when the Creator nudges me to trust in the unknown and unpredictable emergence of creativity. This moment of creativity is best described as an “empty moment” or Zen “no-mind” where creativity is channeled through me onto the canvas. In essence, I become a witness, watching with anticipation as brush movements and color combinations manifest themselves on a blank canvas. My painting style has always been an intuitive process, largely guided by my instinct for subtle color combinations and bold, decisive brush movements. Throughout several months of immersed studio time, my creative process was altered and my comfort zone abandoned. The persistence of intuitive guidance transformed my traditional lighter, ethereal canvas backgrounds into dark, mysterious palettes. My passion for black, reds and jewel toned gestural brush strokes metamorphosed into soft, light colored brush movements, as shown in “Angels Sing”. This series of paintings reminds me to listen and trust my instincts. To risk all that I know, in order to walk through the doorway of intuition into a new dimension of creativity . . . an evolution of greater potential for both canvas and artist. “Angels Sing” was commissioned and titled by Becky and Chip Quammen for their 2007 corporate Christmas card. Seeing an angel within the lilac brush movement in the center of the painting spoke to them as a universal message of inspiration and hope. Brenda Heim, 2007
